Traditional Cusco

Get to know the city of Cusco, an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and possessor of a style all its own. The stones that make up its walls and streets radiate a magical energy and speak of its grand past. Begin the tour at the Koricancha Temple, an old Incan palace and main center for the worship of the sun god, Inti. Once the Spanish conquered Peru, the Dominican order built a lovely church over top this temple’s foundations, the Church of Santo Domingo which still stands today. Next stop, the Main Square, upon which sit the Cathedral, the beautiful Church of La Compañia de Jesus (Society of Christ), and other Colonial period buildings. Continue your adventure at the Sacsayhuaman Fortress built of enormous stone blocks expertly shaped by the Incas. It is strategically located at the top of a hill overlooking the city of Cusco. What a view! On the outskirts of the city are three archeological sites you won’t want to pass up: Qenko, Puca-Pucara, and Tambomachay, important religious and administrative centers for the Incas that resonate with the power of their past glory. There’s just too much to see in one day, so you’ll have to stay in town and venture out again, this time to the neighborhood of San Blas where the city’s top artisans live and work.
